Your Prospect Score Should Show Its Work

A number you have to trust blindly is not intelligence. It is a guess with a decimal point.

Most AI prospecting tools hand you a score and ask you to trust it. An 87, a "hot" tag, a ranking with nothing underneath it. You are supposed to take the number on faith. That is a problem, because a score you cannot inspect is indistinguishable from a score that is wrong. ## A score is only as good as its evidence A prospect score should show its work. Every signal behind the number should carry a date and a source you can open and check for yourself. - The funding news, with the announcement behind it. - The new executive, with the profile that confirms it. - The warehouse lease, the new software purchase, the jump in hiring velocity, each pointing back to where it came from. When the evidence is attached, the score stops being a black box and becomes a claim you can audit. A rep never has to take the tool's word for it. They can read the actual reasons a prospect ranked high and decide for themselves whether those reasons hold up. ## Why this matters before the call Verifiable evidence changes what happens right before outreach. Instead of trusting a number, the rep confirms the reason to reach out, and then uses that exact reason as the opening of the message. That is the difference between "the tool said this account is a 90" and "this account just signed a new lease, posted three operations roles, and brought on a VP of supply chain, so here is why I am calling." One is a leap of faith. The other is a briefing. It also builds trust in the system over time. When a rep can check the reasoning and it holds up again and again, they start to rely on it. When they cannot check it, they quietly go back to their own gut. ## The takeaway The value of a prospect score is not the number. It is the evidence you can trace behind it. Demand a score that shows its work, because the reasons are what a rep actually acts on, and a reason you cannot verify is not worth much when it is your time on the line.
