A lot of sales teams got faster at prospecting this year and got almost no better at it.

AI handed everyone a shovel that moves ten times the dirt in half the time. The natural instinct was to dig more. So out went more lists, longer sequences, and more messages than ever before. The activity numbers climbed. The results mostly did not.

## Speed is not the constraint

Digging faster only helps if you are standing over something worth digging for.

When the accounts were never a fit to begin with, speed does not save you. It just gets you to the dead end quicker, and it burns more goodwill along the way. A thousand well-written messages to the wrong thousand people is not progress. It is a faster route to the same empty pipeline, with more scorched inboxes behind it.

The constraint on most teams was never how fast they could send. It was whether they were sending to the right accounts with the right reason. AI made the easy part faster and left the hard part untouched.

## The work that actually moves a quarter

The work that changes a quarter happens before a rep writes a single line. It is the unglamorous part:

- Figuring out which accounts have a real reason to buy right now.
- Understanding what is driving that reason.
- Deciding which angle will actually earn a reply.

That is the part worth speeding up, and it is the part most teams skipped in the rush to send more. Get those three things right and even a modest number of messages outperforms a flood of fast, generic ones.

## The point

More speed on the wrong work is not an improvement. Point the new tools at the decision that actually matters, which accounts deserve your attention and why, and let volume be the last thing you scale, not the first.
